The challenge
Fresh Water is a scarce resource. 3% of all water on Earth is fresh water. Only 1% of it is available for human use, and the rest are stored in ice caps and glaciers. The available fresh water is not sufficient to satisfy increasing demand. This leads to various issues such as: - Increasing number of avoidable deaths - Missed opportunities for development - High economic losses in affected fields Where can we find more fresh water? Desalination of sea water. Current desalination of sea water relies on established methods such as reverse osmosis. But these methods are: - Fossil fuel dependent - Expensive - Destorying habitats
The solution
Our solution is Biodesalination. The available fresh water is not sufficient to satisfy increasing demand. This leads to various issues. The addition of a green light activated cloride pump and sodium antiporters to the cells membrane allows for water desalination. With these techniques, we aim to convert sea water into fresh water for agriculture and industrial use via biodesalination. We are Aestuarium
